The Flambeau River is the crown jewel of the state forest. With 75 miles of the north and south forks lying iwth the forest's boundary, its pristine waters and shoreline are available for all to enjoy. The Flambeau River offers a little bit of everything. From canoeing, camping, kayaking, and tubing - to fishing and waterfowl hunting - there is something for all ages.
The Little Falls - Slough Gundy Scenic Area is a nice little juant over to the southern portion of Sawyer County into the Flambeau River State Forest. To give you some perspective, the Slough Gundy Scenic Area is 25.4 miles from Winter Wisconsin. So, you'll have to hop in a car to find this beautiful area on the South Fork of the Flambeau River. To begin your trip, you'll take Hwy W out of Winter and travel 16.7 miles into the Flambeau River State Forest where you'll find Hwy M on your right. Follow Hwy M another 8.7 miles to where you'll see the sign for the Little Falls - Slough Gundy Scenic Area.
Here, you can access public parking, information about the Flambeau River State Forest regarding River Camping, and paddling the Flambeau River. There is also a vault toilet for those that need to go potty before exploring the area.
As you enter the trail head you'll wander down a gravel path neatly maintained and flat with little to no terrain. This is an easy hike for those looking for something that isn't difficult to navigate.
Approximately 0.5 miles down the path, you'll run into a fork in the trail, and have an option to see Little Falls to the left which is just 0.125 miles, or head down to the Slough Gundy Scenic Area just 0.25 miles. The trail does loop, so you can go in either direction, and easily follow the path from Little Falls and go directly to the Slough Gundy Scenic Area.
Making your way to Little Falls. This is a beautiful area with rocks and boulders you can walk on and attempt to cross the river if you are feeling froggy enough to do so.
Slough Gundy Scenic Area
As you make your way to the Slough Gundy Scenic Area, you'll have to cross an area with tons of rocks, and you may feel like you're not on the path - rest assured, you are on the right path.
The Slough Gundy Scenic Area is quite the sight. There are some really unique areas leading up to the area. One of the most popular attractions were the area where you can dive into the river from the rock formations. At the lower levels, you'll find folks fishing along the river, sunbathing, and/or swimming.
Approaching the area, you'll find an area that appears to be cleared out from erosion and/or evidence of the river levels raising at various times of the year. Nonetheless, this makes for quite the unique sight, and an area you can explore and has little to vegitation on the ground. As you continue to head north, you'll find a rocky ledge where locals jump into the river, and a rope to get back up to the top. On the right side of this rocky ledge, is an area resembling a beach.
